Weekly indicators on the rise

With the Easter long weekend on the horizon, the most recent weekly statistics recorded by the City’s enforcement and emergency services are a timely reminder of the shared responsibility for public safety – particularly over one of the busiest holiday periods in Cape Town.
In the past week, the City’s enforcement agencies made 311 arrests and issued 64 707 fines and notices for various traffic and by-law transgressions.
It’s a 21% increase week on week.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre too noted an increase in calls for help, with 1 837 incidents logged – and increases in cases of assault and motor vehicle accidents of between 40% and 50%.
‘These statistics are not what we want to see heading into the Easter period, which historically, presents some challenges, particularly in terms of road safety. I want to remind residents but also visitors to our city to please put their personal safety first at all times, but especially over the holiday periods. I understand people’s desire to let their hair down and have a good time, but please do so responsibly.
‘Our staff deployment will follow the festive season plan, with emphasis on the roads, popular recreational areas and other places of public interest. But we will also continue our focus on daily operational demands, like our deployment in gang and crime hotspots,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
By department, Law Enforcement officers arrested 203 suspects in the past week, and issued 5 406 notices.
Their Metro Police counterparts made 63 arrests, including 11 motorists for driving under the influence, and issued 2 878 fines.
In one of the latest successes in Lentegeur on Sunday, 13 April, K9 Kiana picked up what a suspect threw down, when she sniffed out the prohibited firearm he discarded while being pursued.
Officers were on patrol along the R300 at around 16:00, when the suspect saw them and ran away. During the pursuit, he threw away a plastic bag.
Officers apprehended him a short while later, and unleased K9 Kiana, who recovered the bag containing a 9mm pistol sans serial number, and seven live rounds of ammunition.
On the roads, Traffic Officers arrested 35 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol, three for reckless and negligent driving and seven others for various offences.
They also recorded 56 423 offences, impounded 260 public transport vehicles and executed 1 351 warrants of arrest.
